Over the weekend I did a solo in the woods behind my house and it did not go as I expected it to. Cameron and I were probably 100 feet apart, which I felt was too close, but my dad thought it would be fine. The food I packed was a can of Pringles, some cheese its, peanut-butter sandwiches, and water. We also had a cooler for fruit. I packed a flashlight, a sweatshirt, down coat, raincoat, lighters, pocketknives, a pocket bellows, crazy creek chair, a copy of The Wild, and my journal with some pencils. Was camping in my sector so my hammock and tarp were already set up so I started my solo at about 11:30. I sat in my hammock for a little bit and then moved to my crazy creek to read The Wild. While I was reading the Pringles grabbed my attention and I ate way too many. About an hour after my solo started my brother had started to move around, breaking sticks for fun, and coming near my campsite. I kept on telling him to go yet he still came back occasionally. I had my lunch, which was a peanut butter sandwich, and kept on reading. A little later I started to break sticks with Cameron and from there the solo slowly differed from my plan. When I wasn’t reading I was usually hanging out with Cameron, which I should not have, but he found some wood frogs, a red tailed hawk getting mobbed, and a pileated woodpecker so it was not the worst that I had spent some time with him. My dad then made a solo challenge, which was to make a fire in the fire pit which Cameron and I did together further changing the solo. The kindling was wet so we had to use newspaper which worked well. After we made the fire I went to bed at about nine o’clock. At 11:50, I felt like I was going to puke so I went inside. I never did puke but slept inside because I felt horrible. The next morning I woke up and went back outside to finish my solo. During that time I finished into the wild and relaxed in my hammock and then solo was over. As I look back on my solo it went quite poorly. My social interaction was not very limited due to all the people around me and myself being bored and wanting to do something else. Comparing this to other experiences camping, it was not a solo but more of a normal day but spent outside. I should have been more diligent in keeping to myself but there were lots of distractions. I did have fun but it was nothing like I though or wanted it to be.
