Through The Creek

Updated: Jun 2, 2020

As I just prepared to enhance my sector at home, I left. I headed up to Chautauqua, New York, to set up my house for the summer. Heading to New York excited me for a chance to explore the woods with an entirely new eye. I could not remember the last time I had ventured through the woods and creek, but I was ready to do it now. Putting on a pair of boots, I began walking through the creek. The creek was around two feet deep and would stay like that until the next heavy rain since the creek was only two-feet deep; it made for a clear view of everything under its rushing water. Even with slow gliding steps through the creek, I could see the disturbance I was creating. A giant school of minnows scurried away as soon as I took another step in the water. It was impressive to see how unified they all were. As if it had been choreographed when I took a step, all the minnows jutted to the left in unison. With another step, they did the same thing until I had moved on, showing I had no interest in preying upon them. A little way down the creek, I saw a small underwater den. Peering out of the den were two whiskers connected to a long tapering body. The bugging eyes stared as I passed unaffected by my presence. The intent staring at the Catfish made me realize how I was an alien in his environment. Every creature I passed by took note of me. They assumed me a predator, and for a good reason. As the creek reached the lake, I came across a dam. The structure was made from what looked like thousands of branches and was quite impressive. I looked to find the possible occupant of it, but after a while, I gave up. Instead of walking back through the creek, I decided to explore the woods next to it to return home. After only a couple of steps into the shrubs, I found who was responsible for creating the dam. Unfortunately, something found him before I did. The beaver had clearly been dead awhile, but a few distinct features remained to confirm it was a beaver. Unlike the teeth we have, a beaver has dark orange teeth. No, this is not from but hygiene, but rather the traces of iron in their teeth. The iron in their teeth is what gives them the ability to bite through wood with ease. It’s only remaining foot also gave me clarity it was a beaver. A paw with sharp claws connected by webbing. The webbing being necessary for a beaver due to the fact it spends a lot of time in the water. Having decomposed for so long, I was unable to determine how it died. Puzzled an unable to make any informed guesses, so I continued on my way.
