The momma robin watches over her children very protectively. I must wait to get closer and take a picture. The mother keeps an eye trained at me at all times, while the father watches from a perch in a tree branch above. They must fulfil their primal parental instincts of protection even though I mean no harm. I observe the nest for days and see many small moments in the chick's young life. I see them being fed worms everyday and the mother cleaning out the nest carefully to protect her young from disease. I have watched since they had just hatched but now I watch as they begin to become more lively. The mom’s head is on a swivel looking out for any danger to her children and the father chirps harshly at me from the tree above. I decide to retreat to the confines of my house for safety as the father has flown at me once before. I settle on a spot in my living room that still gives me a reasonable view of the nest. The robins now having grown to more than double of their original size, begin to tentatively stretch their wings. Beating them while still lying in the nest. This takes place while the mother is about 20ish feet away in my yard. I believe my sudden movement and those of the chick brought her back to the nest. She sits down in the middle and all of her chicks cuddle against her red breast. Soon they should reach the fledgling stage and begin flight attempts which I can’t wait to watch. For now the mother and father continuously search and find food. There are many more worms than I thought in my yard. It has been truly fascinating to watch these birds from just after birth until now and I can’t wait to see more.
