Final Artist Statement:

Throughout this intensive, I feel my perspective and relationship with nature has grown and improved. About 4 weeks ago when I spent time outside, I would walk through the woods deeply thinking about anything on my mind. I would occasionally look up and notice dark small birds flying through the air and disappearing in tree branches. I would pass bunches of flowers, admire them for a few moments, and continue on my walk. Now, I feel I have started to go outside with a purpose in mind and intentionally paying attention to nature, trying to identify different birds, trees, plants, and wildflowers. Noticing and knowing the differences between birds and plants has helped open my eyes to understanding the large diversity of nature in my own backyard. Along with this, I have also began to recognize the presence of nature in my life and in society. Many times, when hiking in local parks I have witnessed how people interact with nature -- some people are on their phones or having loud conversations, somewhat neglecting the nature around them, while others are quietly observing. Being more aware of how other people act and focusing on being present while interacting with nature, I strangely feel more connected to the natural world. And I hope to continue building my connection through simply spending time observing and exploring new places.
