I took a while to choose my sector because I wanted it to be close to the creek in the woods behind my house but also wanted to be able to set up a hammock and tarp. One problem with this is that there are not many good trees to set up a hammock near the creek, so I choose a spot about ten yards from the creek. My sector has some fallen trees that I am wrote this journal on so I do not need to set up my hammock if I do not want to sit on the ground. There is also some vegetation most notably a small patch of ivy or something similar with yellow flowers. I wanted to climb a hemlock tree to watch the sunset and write my journal while in the tree however, that would have been very hard and dangerous because of how small the trunk was but the branches were not very strong. Instead, I choose to journal in my sector which should work fine. I’m in my sector but the sunset is almost over yet the essence of some of the more vivid colors are still there. There is some fiery orange creeping through the trees and a calm, pale yellow is just above the trees. Overhead the blue has the same qualities as the yellow. The colors remind me of Easter. Where the blue and yellow there is a small area of sky that is white like paper. I can hear a few bird calls but I do not recognize them. One that I can recognize is the somewhat shrill call of the red winged blackbird. Because it is getting dark I can’t see any birds though. I can also hear my dog, whining to go back inside. One bird call is very different from the rest in that it sounds like an angry chirp or bark almost. I look up and see what was making the sound and see a red bellied woodpecker. It was to far away to get a photo and the lack of adequate lighting did not help so I left my sector to get a better picture. When I first saw the bird it was on a small dead tree but it is now near the top of a large tree. I took a photo but it is low quality due to the poor lighting and the zoom on my phone is not very powerful so it is hard to see in the photo. From my eye however I can see it’s bright red head giving away it’s camouflage of it’s striped black and white back against the dark tree bark. I went inside to get my hammock and also a bird watching book. I can’t see any birds so I am going to sketch a red winged blackbird.
